Performance Mindset

I found myself coaching an advanced student the other day about her approach to her concerto cadenza.

Student when asked, “How is the cadenza?”  replied, “I don’t know if I can play it in tune?”

The word “don’t” stimulated me to ask her if she had ever heard of the children’s book, “The Little Engine that Could”.   In the book a small train chants,” I think I can, I think I can, I think I can…. ” The little engine is able to conquer a big hill.

Great news, I helped her problem solve the passage which included my vote of confidence, ” I think you CAN do it!”   She achieved a confident and successful outcome. It started with a positive mindset!
